For the severely obese literature professor Charlie (Brendan Fraser), few things hold any meaning. Since the death of his beloved partner, for whom he left his wife and daughter, he has barricaded himself in his darkened apartment. He gives online seminars without video because he is ashamed of his weight. He ignores the advice of his only friend and nurse, Liz (Hong Chau), to seek hospital treatment for his worsening heart condition. But he has one remaining wish: to see his 16-year-old daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink), again. The teenager agrees. Under the guise of helping with her schoolwork, they both attempt a painful reconciliation—and to say goodbye.
