Followed by live audio essay Dub Epistemologies by Ashley Holmes
Shot in striking black and white, Imran Perretta’s feature debut follows twelve-year-old friends Ish and Maram as they spend their summer roaming the woods and neighbourhoods of Luton, testing the limits of childhood. Following a police stop-and-search, the racial profiling that surrounds them is suddenly brought into the space of their everyday lives.
This special screening will be followed by a newly commissioned iteration of Dub Epistemologies by the artist Ashley Holmes.
Dub Epistemologies is a series of hybrid talks and live audio essays by Ashley Holmes, exploring sound and listening as forms of knowledge production and engaging critically with the social, cultural and spiritual traditions of Black music.
Holmes treats Dub as both concept and method, rooted in movement, repetition and time, where ideas and histories are cited, echoed and reworked. Building on Clyde Woods' Blues Epistemology, which traces the connections between culture and political economy in the Mississippi Delta, he applies this approach to Dub, the Caribbean and Britain, mapping places and surfacing histories that are felt as much as heard. The latest iteration of the Dub Epistemologies audio essay takes Luton as a starting point to explore ideas of kinship, solidarity and grief, among other themes that politicise marginalised people in contemporary society. Moving between sound, spoken word and archive, the essay considers how these experiences are carried, shared and transmitted through music and collective listening. Ashley Holmes is an artist, DJ and broadcaster whose work across sound, performance, drawing, printmaking and publishing explores how music is produced, owned and remembered. He has been resident on NTS Radio since 2017 hosting monthly show Tough Matter and is currently developing a series of live audio essays on oral histories and the politics of musical transmission.
