In 1930s Algeria, the Frenchman Meursault (Benjamin Voisin) lives without any apparent connection to his surroundings. Indifferent to societal expectations and personal relationships, he remains detached, even in the face of momentous events. Even at his mother's funeral, he seems unmoved. The very next day, he embarks on an affair with Marie (Rebecca Marder), a former colleague. But it is his neighbor Raymond (Pierre Lottin) who finally manages to stir something within Meursault, though not necessarily in a positive way. Raymond is involved in sinister affairs and eventually draws Meursault down into the dark side. There, he is forced to reconsider his detached attitude towards others and his own life.
