When celebrity tv trainer (Demi Moore) is sacked by her producer, she reluctantly opts for a mysterious wonder drug ("The Substance”). It takes only one injection and—for a precisely specified period of time—she turns into a youthful beauty in her mid-twenties called Sue (Margaret Qualley). The camera work, cutting, editing and general aesthetic are outlandishly stylish and make THE SUBSTANCE much more than ‘just’ a movie.
